Project description
The Project “New port of Korčula – port of Polačište” includes the relocation of the existing ferry port of Dominče and the old town port to the new location of Polačište.
The design of the Port of Polačište includes the construction of the following marine structures:
- jetty on the eastern end of the port,
- Eastern coastal wall in the northeast-southwest direction,
- The western coastal wall in the northwest-southeast direction,
- Jetty as an extension of the western coastal wall.
Four concrete ramps for receiving ferries are planned on the coastal walls, three in the eastern part and one in the western part. In the rear area of the port, waiting and loading areas are planned for loading vehicles and passengers onto ships, as well as other areas used for port services and traffic regulation.
Project goal
The construction of four ferry ramps, an operational jetty and two mooring banks will increase the capacity of maritime traffic, and the new port of Polačište will allow vessels to dock in all weather conditions.
In addition to the above, the project will contribute to easier and faster maneuvering, which will speed up the docking and departure time of the ship towards the mainland and neighboring islands. The construction of the port of Polačište will ensure the integration of the island of Korčula into the wider transport network, especially due to the shorter travel time to the island of Korčula, which will stimulate local economic growth and have a positive effect on the demographic picture and urban development of the island, as well as facilitate the daily activities of local residents (seeing a doctor, education). The implementation of the project will improve the quality of public maritime transport, ensure long-term sustainability, increase passenger mobility and improve the general quality of life. All of the above has a positive effect on the development of the economy and the quality of life of the local population.
