Project description

The intelligent transport system (ITS) represents the management and information-communication superstructure of the classical transport system, which contains a number of application and infrastructure solutions.

  1. Traffic management – traffic light system and adaptive traffic management is part of a system in which traffic light programs are optimized according to various parameters such as traffic volume and queues
  2. Video surveillance of the traffic system is being installed at 28 intersections with traffic lights both for the detection of traffic flows through traffic analytical cameras, as well as for raising the level of safety and providing the operator with insight into the most critical locations of the road infrastructure
  3. Passenger information services – mobile application. This part of the system includes travel information, planning support, pre-trip information services, static and dynamic information, and support services.
  4. Driver information services – variable message sign system. This part of the system is used to inform passengers by using appropriate and adequate warnings, orders and prohibitions, and notifications through dynamic information panels placed on portals above roads at key locations
  5. Prioritization of public transport vehicles and emergency services
  6. Systems for monitoring weather conditions and environmental conditions. Using information from meteorological stations, accurate and timely information about meteorological conditions that may affect travel is provided to all users of the transport system. In addition to weather conditions, information on air quality and noise level is important
  7. All ITS subsystems are connected to the Traffic Management Center – the central control room for mobility management, where traffic is monitored and controlled and mobility strategies are implemented.

Project goal

The intelligent transport system (ITS) will contribute to the creation of a more efficient transport system in the functional traffic area of the city of Split in the form of increased safety, productivity, traffic efficiency and sustainability and reduction of traffic congestion.

The goal of ITS is to improve the performance of the transport system, which is reflected in the quality of transport services, where the performance assessment is manifested through the measurement of capacity, response time, and the efficiency of traffic regulation. In general, the project contributes to the efficient use of resources. Specifically, the project addresses the problems of traffic congestion, environmental pollution, reduced levels of safety and traffic control through the interoperability of ITS subsystems, provision of complete traffic information, monitoring of weather conditions and the environment, and other traffic-related monitoring.
