Project description

The Project involves the reconstruction of 1.200 m of the existing breakwater and the construction of 145,75 m of missing breakwater wall.

The planned reconstruction of 1,200 meters of the existing breakwater includes partial excavation and laying the foundation of the existing embankment, installation of the foundation stone structure and application of the final leveling layer, placement of concrete blocks, construction and installation of berms along the wall surfaces, dry concreting of the crown of the wall (the crown of the wall will be raised by 75 cm across the entire width) and parapet, installation of wall equipment such as rings, posts, ladders, fasteners and PVC pipes for possible future installations, and final works and environmental remediation.

The breakwater upgrade works will extend the protective wall of the breakwater of the Port of Pula from point 0+983.00 to 1+128.75, in a total length of 145.75 meters, which will “close” the opening in the breakwater structure that was once used for smaller vessels.

Project goal

The overall objective of the project is to ensure safe maritime access for cargo, passenger and recreational vessels arriving at and leaving the Port, as well as the protection of the adjacent maritime infrastructure located at Pula Bay.

The implementation of the project will result in enhanced structural integrity of the breakwater which will provide robust protection for Pula Bay against high seas, severe weather conditions, and potential flooding; improved maritime access safety for passenger, cargo and recreational vessels arriving at and leaving the Pula Port; more efficient operations, including smoother cargo and passenger handling, to bolster the Port of Pula’s role as a key economic driver in the region.
