Modernisation of the tram infrastructure in Osijek

The project plans to increase the number of public transport users, which will contribute to the further development of the city and the improvement of the standard of living for the citizens of Osijek.

The following elements of the tram infrastructure are scheduled to be modernized or built:

1. Modernization of 2 existing rectifier stations
2. Construction of a new rectifier station
3. Construction of the underground cable network
4. Modernization of a 9,5 km long segment of the overhead catenary
5. Modernization of a 9,5 km long section of the existing tram line
6. Modernization of 23 tram stops by making them accessible to persons with disabilities and persons with reduced mobility, and harmonizing them with the prescribed technical standards (in the sense of length, height and safety)

In light of the fact that no significant investment has been made in infrastructure since 2009 (tram network, depot with outdated equipment), and in the fleet (some of the trams and buses were refurbished in 2009), it is necessary to modernize the existing condition of the company’s assets in order to keep the public transport service of the city Osijek at the level required by the EU standards in terms of safety, reliability, accessibility to people with disabilities and reduction in the emission of CO2 which will increase company’s profitability and efficiency.

The objective of the project is to increase the number of public transport users, which will contribute to the further development of the city and the improvement of the standard of living of the citizens of Osijek. Modernization of a 9.5 km of railway and 9.5 km of contact line, modernization of two and construction of one rectification station and construction of underground cable network and modernization of 23 tram stops is planned by this project.

The main purpose of the project is to renovate the infrastructure as a preliminary phase of preparation for the procurement of low-floor vehicles – trams, which will raise the level of public transport in the City of Osijek to a higher standard compared to the current situation. . It is to be expected that raising the value of tram traffic in the city will, in a certain number, reduce the share of cars, and thus certainly contribute to the reduction of all types of exhaust gases into the atmosphere.

The justification of the investment is reflected in the fulfillment of the goals of the following participants: from the passenger’s point of view = safety, reliability, accuracy and comfort of the service will increase which will result in an increase in the number of users; from the point of view of the company and business partners = more rational, efficient and profitable overall business of the company as a business entity; from the point of view of the City, the State and the wider community = benefit through regular fulfillment of obligations with a significant reduction of negative CO2 emissions, which results in a better quality of life.
