Project description

The project successfully modernized HŽPP’s rolling stock by procuring 21 new electric multiple units (EMUs) to enhance the competitiveness of passenger services. Phase one delivered 17 EMUs by the end of 2023, followed by phase two with the remaining 4 EMUs for regional rail traffic in the first half of 2024.

The basic technical characteristics of the new EMUs are as follows:
• Top speed: 160 km/h;
• Type: low-floor single-story electric multiple units;
• Doors per side (minimum): 3-4 per vehicle for regional and 6-8 per vehicle for urban-suburban EMUs;
• Minimum unit capacity: 130 seats (total 500 passengers) for city-suburban and 210 seats (total 400 passengers) for regional.

Project results

The project has modernized HŽPP’s rolling stock by introducing new electric multiple units (EMUs) that enhance passenger comfort, reduce travel times, increase capacity, and improve reliability, thereby encouraging more users to choose rail passenger transportation.

In addition to improving comfort and the general quality of services provided, the most notable achievements of the project include:

  1. increasing rail transport availability by increasing the number of low-floor vehicles;
  2. improving the security of the rail system;
  3. modal shift from personal transportation to rail;
  4. improving energy efficiency.
