Project summary

The project envisages construction of the second track and reconstruction on the entire 36.4 km railway line section Dugo Selo-Križevci (38.23 km if the reconstruction of Dugo Selo station is included).

The project envisages construction of the second track and reconstruction on the entire 36.4 km railway line section Dugo Selo-Križevci (38.23 km if the reconstruction of Dugo Selo station is included), reconstruction of horizontal curves on the 9.4 km existing track, major reconstruction of the existing stations of Dugo Selo, Vrbovec and Križevci and pertaining stops, construction of the new station Gradec, construction of 5 new bridges and the reconstruction of the existing 7, elimination of 17 level crossings and their replacement with 12 grade-separated crossings with roads at two levels, replacement of 2 pedestrian crossings with new underpasses, upgrade of fixed electric traction installations and modernization of interlocking, signalling and telecommunication devices.

The project, which includes upgrade of the railway section Dugo Selo – Križevci and construction of its second track, is a part of a larger project for establishing a high-efficiency, double-track railway line for mixed transport along the entire Mediterranean corridor RH2, which will connect the Iberian Peninsula, through the Port of Rijeka, Zagreb and Budapest, with the Hungarian-Ukrainian border and the TEN-T European network.
With Croatia’s accession to the EU, the port of Rijeka has become an entry / exit point for the single market. Thus, an increase in international freight transport from and to the Central European countries is expected. This provides the main rationale for adding a second track and reconstructing the existing track.
On this section of the railway the traffic capacity is, due to the single track and the great distance between neighboring stations, limited. Thus, it is impossible to meet the requirements necessary for increasing the number of freight and suburban trains.
The reconstruction of individual horizontal curves, track structures and fixed electric traction installations will enable train operation at the designed speed of 160 km/h along the entire length of the railway line section. Stations will be reconstructed to receive 750 m long interoperable freight trains and 400 m long interoperable passenger trains with 25 t/axle maximum permitted load. Stops will be reconstructed in line with the requirements for local transport of passengers. Designed to achieve the stated goals, the activities planned by the project include:

  • construction of the second track and reconstruction on the entire railway line section in the length of 36.4 km (including the reconstruction of Dugo Selo station 38.23 km)
  • reconstruction of horizontal curves on the 9.4 km existing track
  • major reconstruction of the existing stations of Dugo Selo, Vrbovec and Križevci and pertaining stops Božjakovina and Repinec, in addition to the construction of the new station in Gradec
  • construction of 6 new bridges (including 2 road bridges) and the reconstruction of the existing 7, reconstruction / construction of 36 railway culverts
  • construction of 12 grade-separated crossings with roads at two levels (11 overpasses and 1 underpass) and 6 pedestrian underpasses at stations and stops with the elimination of 17 level crossings and 2 pedestrian crossings
  • upgrade of fixed electric traction installations and modernization of interlocking and signalling, and telecommunication devices with the installation of Level 1: ETCS
  • construction of 20 km of noise protection walls and 39 km of service and access roads
Construction of parking lots is planned on the stations and stops. However, the number of parking spaces is dependent on the number of passengers gravitating to the stop, i.e. coordination and synergy between different transport sectors will be ensured. In drafting the project design, attention was paid to meet the technical requirements prescribed by the TEN-T, TSI and the Railway Safety Directive that was in force at the time. Regarding ERTMS, ETCS 1 will be implemented, whereas GSM-R remains to be solved in the following financial framework for the entire railway network in the Republic of Croatia (i.e. the TEN-T rail network in the Republic of Croatia).

The project is divided into 2 phases (two operational programs OPT and OPCC).
Project activities included in the OPCC involve: land acquisition – associated expenditure 8.377.352,49 EUR, construction works – associated expenditure 144.047.600,52 EUR, site supervision – associated expenditure 1.702.927,28 EUR and a reserve in the amount of 16.527.437,60 EUR.
Phase II includes the completion of works on all remaining parts of the Phase I and works on buildings which remained unfinished, or which were not included in Phase I., i.e. crossings:

  • no. 1 (overpass) on km -0+689
  • no. 2 (overpass) on km 1+201
  • no. 3 (overpass) on km 2+120
  • no. 4 (overpass) on km 4+050
  • no. 5 (overpass) on km 6+204
  • no. 6 (overpass) on km 10+266
    Bridges:
  • Zelina on km 4+984
  • Stara Lonja on km 8+597
  • Lonja on km 9+931
  • Stara Dulepska on km 11+851
  • Luka I on km 13+523
  • Lipnica on 13+897
  • potok Luka on km 14+929
  • Luka II on km 15+531
  • Črnec on km 20+108
  • Petrovina on km 30+794
  • at Križevci station on km 35+529
  • road (as part of the service road)
Stations: Dugo Selo, Gradec and Križevci and the stops Božjakovina and Repinec.
In addition to the above enlisted works, other works on culverts, noise protection walls, catenary and power systems, signalling and telecommunication devices will also be finalized. That is, all other works, specified in the bill of quantities for the works, which are necessary for the completion of the project in accordance with the contract.

Objective of the project

The objective of the Dugo Selo – Križevci Railway Section Upgrade and Construction of Second Track Project is the reconstruction of the railway in the total length of 38.23 km, with minor alterations to the route, the addition of a second track and the reconstruction of the pertaining stations.

Dugo Selo – Križevci Railway Section Upgrade and Construction of Second Track is a part of a larger project for establishing a high-efficiency, double-track railway line for mixed transport along the entire Mediterranean corridor RH2, which will connect the Iberian Peninsula, through the Port of Rijeka, Zagreb and Budapest, with the Hungarian-Ukrainian border and TEN-T European network.
