Project summary

The project envisages the reconstruction of the Bršica terminal situated in the Raša port basin. The terminal is divided into part for handling timber cargo and part for handing livestock.

Project activities include dismantling and removal of the existing equipment, reconstruction of the 164 m quay (phase 1 90 m, phase 2 74 m) replacing damaged parts of the existing quay structure by new reinforced concrete slab and supporting beams, installation of 2 new rail tracks and connecting sections and 2 new gantry crane rails with pertaining power supply channels, installation of ship berthing equipment, construction of drainage and waste water system as well as ship water supply and fire protection hydrant network, and replacement of existing electrical wiring.

The project is part of a global project for the development of the port of Rijeka, which was previously identified as part of the basic Mediterranean corridor and ports of special (international) economic interest to the Republic of Croatia. She is a member of the Association of Northern Adriatic Ports (NAPA), which brings together four ports that are the gateway to the markets of Central Europe. The ports of Rijeka, Venice, Trieste and Koper seek to promote the northern Adriatic route by cooperating in the development of maritime and railway infrastructure, maritime and hinterland connections and other aspects of maritime and multimodal transport in order to increase the competitiveness of these ports. The Raša Basin, part of the Port of Rijeka, consists of the Bršica Terminal, which is divided into a part for handling wood and a part for handling livestock, and a storage area of Štalija in the hinterland. Due to aging and damaged port infrastructure, daily operations, especially loading and unloading of timber, are not performed with maximum efficiency. Together with the increase in timber traffic, this creates a bottleneck. The main objective of the project is to renovate the port in order to enable the Port of Rijeka to respond appropriately to the current growing trend of timber traffic that will continue in the coming years. The 164-meter-long reconstruction of the coast will be carried out in two phases, ie first 90 meters and then the remaining 74 meters, keeping the second part operational.

In order to achieve its general objective, the project includes design and works on:
a) dismantling and removal of existing equipment;
b) restoration of the embankment;
c) installation of two gantry tracks on the reconstructed coastal structure;
d) construction of 2 railway tracks with connecting parts to the reconstructed coastal structure;
e) installation of equipment on the reconstructed coastal structure.

Objective of the project

Reconstruction of the southern part of the coast in the length of approximately 90m and reconstruction of the other part of the coast in the northern part of 74m will have a positive effect on safety and quality of service and increase capacity in transshipment of general cargo.
